The FS 52ES is the 20" Elite S — connected parallelogram tables, single-lever changeover, and a 4-post planer bed in a 520mm working width. If you're regularly processing wide slabs, full-width panels, or solid stock that won't fit through a 16" machine, this is the machine built for it. It runs on a 230V single-phase circuit.
At a Glance
- 88.56" (2,250mm) jointer table, 20.44" (520mm) working width: face-joint wide slabs and full-width panels in a single pass
- True parallelogram table system: 8 cam points keep both jointer tables coplanar at every jointing height setting; re-verification after adjustment is not necessary in normal use
- Single-lever changeover: no fence removal, no guard removal, both tables unlock and lift simultaneously; dust hose stays connected throughout
- 120mm Xylent spiral cutterhead: 84 carbide inserts across 3 rows, each with 4 cutting edges; rotate three times before replacing; measurably quieter than straight-knife heads
- Four planer feed speeds: 16, 26, 39, and 59 fpm — run rough stock through fast to remove material quickly, dial back to a precision speed for finish passes
- Powered planer bed movement with LED digital readout to 0.1mm resolution
- 4-post planer table on dust-protected trapezoidal-threaded columns
- True single-phase 4.8hp motor: 230V, 30A; not a three-phase motor run through a VFD, no phase converter required
- Freight included; ships from U.S. warehouse
The Details
The Elite S designation brings two structural features that define this machine. The jointer tables are connected on a true parallelogram mechanism — eight cam points, four per table, keep both tables coplanar through the full range of jointing height adjustment. There is no re-verification step after changing jointing height; the geometry is maintained by the mechanism itself. Both tables unlock with a single lever and open away from the operator at 90°. The changeover requires removing neither the fence nor the guard — the guard stays in place, the fence moves to the operator-side position, and the dust port floats between jointer and planer functions without being repositioned. The planer table rides on four trapezoidal-threaded, dust-protected columns with powered bed movement and a digital LED readout to 0.1mm resolution.
The Xylent cutterhead runs 84 carbide inserts across a 120mm-diameter body in three rows. Each 15×15×2.5mm insert has four usable cutting edges — rotate three times before replacing. Spiral geometry shears at an angle rather than cutting head-on, which reduces operational noise and produces fine chips that are easier on your dust collection system. At 84 insert seats, maintenance discipline matters — each seat needs to be cleaned individually before rotating inserts to a fresh cutting edge. The Xylent Maintenance Kit is the right tool for that job and should be considered a required accessory for this machine.
The four planer feed speeds reflect how thicknessing work actually gets done. Rough stock comes off the saw with variability across its face — you're removing material unevenly until the board evens out, and running faster through those early passes is the efficient approach. The 39 and 59 fpm speeds handle that initial stock removal well. Once the board is consistent and you're working toward final thickness, dropping to 16 or 26 fpm gives you a cleaner surface with less tearout on demanding grain. Two precision speeds and two production speeds gives you the right setting for each stage rather than splitting the difference with a single middle speed.
The planer table is 20.44" × 33.46" — wide enough to support full-width stock through the full depth of cut. The infeed roller is helicoidal steel for consistent grip across the working width; the outfeed roller is rubber-coated for clean release without marring the finished surface.
This machine is heavier than the FS 41ES. Due to its weight and dimensions, liftgate delivery is not a safe option — you will need either a forklift available on site or the ability to pick up from a local freight terminal.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the FS 52ES and the FS 41ES?
The primary difference is working width — 20.44" on the 52ES versus 16" on the FS 41ES. The cutterblock grows from 95mm to 120mm in diameter and from 66 to 84 carbide inserts to span the wider cutting width. The 52ES also adds two additional planer feed speeds — four total (16/26/39/59 fpm) versus two on the 41ES — and includes automatic star-delta start as standard. The parallelogram table system, single-lever changeover, 4-post planer bed, and powered planer bed movement are mechanically identical between the two machines. The 52ES ships in Xylent configuration only as a stocked machine; a Tersa option is available as a factory order.
Is a Tersa cutterhead version available?
Not as a stocked machine. The FS 52ES ships in Xylent configuration only through standard inventory. A Tersa version is available as a factory order through SCM, but lead time is several months from Italy. If the Tersa is important to your workflow, contact us before ordering so we can get accurate lead time information from SCM.
Does this machine require a phase converter?
No. Some combination machines in this category use a three-phase motor run through a VFD to operate on single-phase power, which derates the motor's actual output. This machine runs a purpose-built 4.8hp single-phase motor on 230V — no phase converter, no VFD. You need a dedicated 30A, 240V circuit. If you have three-phase power available, the FS 52ES-X is also offered with an 11hp, 220V three-phase motor.
What dust collection does this machine require?
Minimum 600 CFM through a single 4.7" (120mm) port. The port stays on the same side of the machine and floats between jointer and planer functions without being repositioned. The Xylent cutterhead produces finer chips than a straight-knife head, which improves extraction efficiency at the same CFM.
How does changeover work on the FS 52ES?
Neither the jointer fence nor the guard needs to be removed. The guard stays in place and the fence moves to the operator-side position. Both tables unlock with a single lever and open away from the operator at 90°. The dust hose stays where it is. If you're comparing against Felder or Hammer, note that those machines require the planer table to travel all the way down before switching functions. On every Minimax — including the Classic — mid-travel is sufficient.
Can I add a mortiser to this machine?
Yes. The FS 52ES ships with the mortising table pre-setting already installed. The 0–16mm self-centering chuck attaches directly and is compatible with the FS 52 family. The mortising chuck is available separately.
Does the listed price include shipping?
Yes, shipping is free. Due to the machine's weight and dimensions, liftgate delivery is not a safe option — you will need either a forklift available on site or the ability to pick up from a local freight terminal.
Is the Minimax FS 52ES-X eligible for a Section 179 tax deduction?
Yes. The Minimax FS 52ES-X qualifies as a capital equipment purchase under Section 179, which allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment in the year it is placed in service rather than depreciating it over several years. For a machine at this price point, that deduction can meaningfully offset the net cost of purchase. The deduction limit and phase-out thresholds adjust annually, so the exact benefit depends on your total equipment purchases for the year and your tax situation. Consult your tax advisor on how Section 179 applies to your business. See how much you could save with our Section 179 calculator.
Features
Parallelogram jointer tables: Infeed and outfeed tables connect mechanically and unlock simultaneously with a single lever. Eight cam points — four per table — maintain coplanarity through the full range of jointing height adjustment. Re-verification after height changes is not necessary in normal use.
Xylent spiral cutterhead: 120mm diameter, 84 carbide inserts across 3 rows of 15×15×2.5mm. Each insert has four cutting edges — rotate three times before replacing. Spiral geometry reduces noise and produces fine chips for better dust collection performance. Dynamometric key included for correct insert torque.
Single-lever changeover: The guard stays in place. The fence moves to the operator-side position but does not need to be removed. Both tables unlock with a single lever and open away from the operator at 90°. The dust port stays on the same side of the machine and floats between functions — the hose does not move.
4-post planer table: Four dust-protected trapezoidal-threaded columns provide long-term dimensional stability under daily use. Planer table size: 20.44" × 33.46" (520 × 850mm).
Powered planer bed movement: LED digital readout displays table height to 0.1mm resolution. Accurate height setting without a handwheel.
Four planer feed speeds: 16, 26, 39, and 59 fpm. Run rough stock at higher speeds during initial material removal; drop to a precision speed for finish passes on demanding grain.
Automatic star-delta start: Standard on the FS 52ES. Reduces inrush current at startup for smoother motor engagement.
Jointer fence: 1,200mm × 150mm, center-mounted directly over the cutterhead via a rigid round-bar support. Tilts 0°–45°. Additional overturning fence included for thin workpieces.
True single-phase motor: 4.8hp, 230V. Some competing combination machines use a three-phase motor derated through a VFD to run on single-phase power, which reduces actual output. This is a purpose-built single-phase motor. No VFD, no phase converter. Dedicated 30A circuit required.
OSHA-compliant spring guard: American-style spring guard ships standard. Always covers the unused portion of the cutterhead without requiring manual repositioning when the fence moves. A European-style guard is available as an accessory through OakTree.
Mortising table pre-setting: Ships with mortising table pre-setting installed. The 0–16mm self-centering chuck attaches directly and is compatible with the FS 52 family. Mortising chuck available separately.
Mobility kit: Wheels included standard.
