The S 640P is the largest single-phase bandsaw in the Formula lineup. At 750 lbs with 25.2" cast iron flywheels and 23.6" of resaw height, it handles wide slabs, heavy hardwoods, and demanding resaw work on a standard 30-amp, single-phase circuit.

At a Glance:

  • 4.8 HP, single-phase, 230V on a 30-amp circuit — no phase converter required
  • 23.6" (600mm) resaw height; 24.4" (620mm) cutting width
  • 25.2" (640mm) cast iron flywheels with vulcanized tires
  • Accepts blades up to 1.5" (40mm) — community consensus and practical performance favor 1" to 1.25" for most work
  • Euro-style guides, upper and lower, adjust without tools
  • 23.6" x 34.84" (600 x 885mm) cast iron table, tilts 0° to 45°
  • Foot brake with motor cut-off microswitch
  • Dual 120mm (4.7") dust ports
  • Upper and lower wheel doors open simultaneously with a single key
  • 750 lbs (340 kg) — Italian-made

The Details:

The S 640P is built for shops where resaw capacity is the primary constraint — wide slabs, dense hardwoods, and demanding cuts that require mass and stability at the limits of the cut. At 750 lbs with 25.2" cast iron flywheels, it is a fundamentally different machine in scale from smaller bandsaws. The table reflects that: at 23.6" x 34.84", it provides substantially more support surface when handling wide, heavy stock through the cut.

25.2" Cast Iron Flywheels: The larger 640mm diameter flywheels reduce the bend angle the blade must make on each revolution and increase rotational mass. Both contribute to smoother cutting under load and extended blade life — particularly with carbide-tipped blades where weld fatigue is the primary failure mode.

Vulcanized Tires: Rubber bonded to the wheel during manufacturing, not applied as a slip-on band. More consistent power transfer from wheel to blade and no tire failure on a blade break.

Blade Width: The S 640P accepts blades up to 1.5" (40mm) wide. In practice, community consensus and SCM's own guidance recommend staying at 1" to 1.25" for most work. Blades wider than 1.25" require significantly higher tension to perform correctly, and the incremental beam strength rarely pays off without a power feeder on repetitive high-volume resaw. A 1" or 1.25" carbide blade at correct tension delivers the best results for the vast majority of users.

Euro-Style Guides: Upper and lower guide assemblies set without tools. Position the thrust bearing approximately 1/8" back from the blade body; set the side guides close without contact, just behind the blade gullets. No feeler gauges needed. The guides may spin during a cut from blade harmonics — that is normal and not blade contact. The system uses an industry-standard mounting post, so aftermarket guide options fit without modification.

Foot Brake: The cast iron flywheels carry significant rotational mass — without a brake, coasting to a stop takes considerable time. The foot brake brings the blade to a quick stop and includes a microswitch that cuts power to the motor when pressed, so the machine cannot be running while the brake is engaged. It is a safety feature that also makes the saw faster to work with in practice.

Cast Iron Table: The 23.6" x 34.84" table tilts from 0° to 45°. Managing a wide, heavy slab through a resaw cut without adequate table support is physically demanding and produces inconsistent results. The larger table makes that work more controlled.

Dust Collection: Two 120mm (4.7") dust ports at the lower section of the machine connect to standard 4" or 5" duct. Minimum 500 CFM required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does SCM recommend staying at 1" to 1.25" blades when the machine accepts 1.5"?

Wider blades require significantly more tension to track and cut correctly. At 1.5", the tension required pushes beyond what most shops run and delivers diminishing returns without a power feeder on repetitive high-volume resaw. A 1" or 1.25" carbide blade at correct tension outperforms a wider blade at insufficient tension in nearly every scenario. The 1.5" capacity is there for shops running power feeders on high-volume work.

Is the single-phase S 640P adequate for serious hardwood resaw?

Yes. The 4.8 HP single-phase motor combined with 750 lbs of cast iron and 25.2" flywheels handles the overwhelming majority of hardwood resaw work a serious hobbyist or small shop encounters. The flywheel mass does significant work that motor horsepower alone does not measure. Where the 3-phase version separates itself is in sustained high-volume cutting and power-feeder-assisted resaw. For furniture parts, wide slab resaw, and demanding shop work, the single-phase machine is entirely adequate.

Is the larger table a practical advantage or just a spec number?

It is a practical advantage. At 23.6" x 34.84", the table provides substantially more support surface when handling wide, heavy slabs. Managing a 20"+ wide slab through a resaw cut without adequate table support is physically demanding and produces inconsistent results. The larger table makes that work more controlled.

Do the Euro guides need to be upgraded?

No. The Euro-style guides that ship standard have a decades-long track record and are among the fastest guide systems to set correctly — no tools, no feeler gauges. Spend money on a quality blade before considering aftermarket guides. If you do want to run alternative guides down the road, the Euro system uses an industry-standard mounting post and aftermarket options fit without modification.

What is blade drift, and will this machine drift?

Blade drift is a setup and blade quality issue, not a machine characteristic. The S 640P uses flat tires, meaning you can track the blade anywhere across the wheel and correct for drift at setup. A dull blade will drift on any saw. With a sharp, properly tensioned blade, drift is not a practical issue.

Can I rip solid lumber on this instead of my table saw?

Yes, and many experienced woodworkers move most solid wood ripping to the bandsaw. It is safer than a table saw for this operation — no kickback risk — produces less waste from a thinner kerf, and is less fatiguing over a long session. The table saw remains the right tool for sheet goods and precise crosscutting.

Is business financing available?

Yes. OakTree has partnered with First Citizens Equipment Finance to offer business financing on qualifying purchases. Financing is available to established businesses and can be applied for directly from any qualifying product page — look for the monthly payment estimate below the Add to Cart button and click through to submit a pre-approval application. If approved, a First Citizens representative will follow up to discuss payment terms.

Is the SCM Formula S 640P eligible for a Section 179 tax deduction?

Yes. The SCM Formula S 640P qualifies as a capital equipment purchase under Section 179, which allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment in the year it is placed in service rather than depreciating it over several years. For a machine at this price point, that deduction can meaningfully offset the net cost of purchase. The deduction limit and phase-out thresholds adjust annually, so the exact benefit depends on your total equipment purchases for the year and your tax situation. Consult your tax advisor on how Section 179 applies to your business. See how much you could save with our Section 179 calculator.
