The S 540P delivers 19.68" of resaw height, 20.47" of cutting width, and 1.25" maximum blade width on a 30-amp, single-phase circuit. At 551 lbs of cast iron with 21.25" vulcanized flywheels, it handles wide slab resaw, bookmatching, and heavy hardwood cutting without asking for a dedicated 3-phase circuit.

At a Glance:

  • 4.8 HP, single-phase, 230V on a 30-amp circuit — no phase converter required
  • 19.68" (500mm) resaw height; 20.47" (520mm) cutting width
  • Accepts blades up to 1.25" (35mm) — more beam strength for dense hardwoods
  • 21.25" (540mm) cast iron flywheels with vulcanized tires — larger diameter reduces blade flex per revolution, extending blade life
  • Euro-style guides, upper and lower, adjust without tools
  • 20.47" x 28.34" (520 x 720mm) cast iron table, tilts 0° to 45°
  • Foot brake with motor cut-off microswitch
  • Dual 120mm (4.7") dust ports
  • Upper and lower wheel doors open simultaneously with a single key
  • 551 lbs (250 kg) — Italian-made

The Details:

The S 540P is built for woodworkers who work regularly with wide slabs, bookmatch figured stock, or cut wide furniture components where resaw capacity and cutting width are the binding constraints. At 551 lbs with 21.25" cast iron flywheels, it delivers stable, consistent performance through the full range of hardwood resaw work on a standard 30-amp, single-phase circuit.

Wider Blade Capacity: The S 540P accepts blades up to 1.25" (35mm) wide. The additional beam strength pays off on heavy resaw in dense hardwoods where blade deflection under load is a practical concern. A 1.25" FB+ carbide blade on this machine is a serious production resaw setup.

21.25" Cast Iron Flywheels: The larger 540mm diameter flywheels reduce the bend angle the blade must make on each revolution. This extends blade life and reduces fatigue cracking at the weld — particularly relevant with carbide-tipped blades like the FB+ where weld integrity matters more than with carbon steel.

Vulcanized Tires: Rubber bonded to the wheel during manufacturing, not applied as a slip-on band. More consistent power transfer from wheel to blade and no tire failure on a blade break.

Euro-Style Guides: Upper and lower guide assemblies set without tools. Position the thrust bearing approximately 1/8" back from the blade body; set the side guides close without contact, just behind the blade gullets. No feeler gauges needed. The guides may spin during a cut from blade harmonics — that is normal and not blade contact. The system uses an industry-standard mounting post, so aftermarket guide options fit without modification.

Foot Brake: The cast iron flywheels carry significant rotational mass — without a brake, coasting to a stop takes considerable time. The foot brake brings the blade to a quick stop and includes a microswitch that cuts power to the motor when pressed, so the machine cannot be running while the brake is engaged. It is a safety feature that also makes the saw faster to work with in practice.

Cast Iron Table: The 20.47" x 28.34" table tilts from 0° to 45°. Wide stock gets full support through the cut.

Dust Collection: Two 120mm (4.7") dust ports at the lower section of the machine connect to standard 4" or 5" duct. Minimum 500 CFM required.

Optional Accessories:

  • MK Morse QuikSilver HB Hook, 1" x 1.3 TPI, 179" — primary resaw blade recommendation for this machine
  • MK Morse QuikSilver HB Hook, 1.25" x 1.3 TPI, 179" — takes advantage of the S 540P's wider blade capacity for heavy resaw
  • MK Morse QuikSilver HEF Raker, 3/8" x 6 TPI, 179" — for curved and contour work
  • MK Morse QuikSilver HEF, 1/4" x 14 TPI, 179" — for tight-radius work
  • MK Morse FB+, 1" x 3 TPI, 179" — carbide-tipped for serious hardwood resaw, veneer, and figured wood; Ohio-made, 3–10 day lead time
  • MK Morse FB+, 1.25" x 3 TPI, 179" — wider carbide for production resaw; full use of the S 540P's blade capacity
  • MK Morse FBS, 1/2" or 3/4" x 3 TPI, 179" — carbide for demanding curved work in hard or exotic species
  • Laguna Resaw King, 1" x 3 TPI, 179" — premium carbide alternative; 3–5 week made-to-order lead time
  • Bandsaw power feeder

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the extra resaw capacity worth it if I only occasionally need it?

The cost difference is a one-time expense. The capacity limitation at a narrower resaw height is permanent. A board at the outer limits of a saw's capacity leaves no margin for error — any variation in feed pressure or blade tension shows up in the cut. Well within capacity, that same board is a comfortable, relaxed cut. The community's consistent experience with bandsaws runs in one direction: nobody regrets buying more capacity.

Do the Euro guides need to be upgraded?

No. The Euro-style guides that ship standard have a decades-long track record and are among the fastest guide systems to set correctly — no tools, no feeler gauges. Spend money on a quality blade before considering aftermarket guides. If you do want to run alternative guides down the road, the Euro system uses an industry-standard mounting post and aftermarket options fit without modification.

Does the larger flywheel diameter help beyond adding mass?

Yes. The 540mm (21.25") diameter wheels reduce the bend angle the blade must make on each revolution. This extends blade life and reduces fatigue cracking at the weld — particularly relevant with carbide-tipped blades where the cost per blade makes longevity a real factor.

What is blade drift, and will this machine drift?

Blade drift is a setup and blade quality issue, not a machine characteristic. The S 540P uses flat tires, meaning you can track the blade anywhere across the wheel and correct for drift at setup. A dull blade will drift on any saw. With a sharp, properly tensioned blade — the QuikSilver HB Hook or FB+ carbide — drift is not a practical issue.

Can I rip solid lumber on this instead of my table saw?

Yes, and many experienced woodworkers move most solid wood ripping to the bandsaw. It is safer than a table saw for this operation — no kickback risk — produces less waste from a thinner kerf, and is less fatiguing over a long session. The table saw remains the right tool for sheet goods and precise crosscutting.

Is business financing available?

Yes. OakTree has partnered with First Citizens Equipment Finance to offer business financing on qualifying purchases. Financing is available to established businesses and can be applied for directly from any qualifying product page — look for the monthly payment estimate below the Add to Cart button and click through to submit a pre-approval application. If approved, a First Citizens representative will follow up to discuss payment terms.

Is the SCM Formula S 540P eligible for a Section 179 tax deduction?

Yes. The SCM Formula S 540P qualifies as a capital equipment purchase under Section 179, which allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment in the year it is placed in service rather than depreciating it over several years. For a machine at this price point, that deduction can meaningfully offset the net cost of purchase. The deduction limit and phase-out thresholds adjust annually, so the exact benefit depends on your total equipment purchases for the year and your tax situation. Consult your tax advisor on how Section 179 applies to your business. See how much you could save with our Section 179 calculator.
