The S 440P is the best-selling Formula bandsaw in North America. At 440 lbs with 17.3" cast iron flywheels, vulcanized tires, and Euro-style guides that set without tools, it handles serious resaw work and fine curve cutting on a standard 30-amp, single-phase circuit.

At a Glance:

  • 4.8 HP, single-phase, 230V on a 30-amp circuit — no phase converter required
  • 17.3" (440mm) resaw height; 16.73" (425mm) cutting width
  • Cast iron flywheels with vulcanized tires — rubber bonded to the wheel, not applied as a slip-on band
  • Euro-style guides, upper and lower, adjust without tools
  • 20.47" x 28.34" (520 x 720mm) cast iron table, tilts 0° to 45°
  • Accepts blades from 1/4" to 1" (30mm)
  • Foot brake with motor cut-off microswitch
  • Dual 120mm (4.7") dust ports
  • Upper and lower wheel doors open simultaneously with a single key
  • 440 lbs (200 kg) — Italian-made

The Details:

The S 440P handles the full range of bandsaw work — fine curved pattern work through resawing thick hardwood slabs — on a 30-amp, single-phase circuit that most dedicated woodworking shops already have. At 440 lbs of cast iron and steel, it is a fundamental departure from the consumer-grade saws most buyers are stepping away from.

Vulcanized Tires: The flywheels use vulcanized rubber tires, meaning the rubber is chemically bonded to the wheel during manufacturing rather than applied as a slip-on band. The practical result is more consistent power transfer from wheel to blade and no tire failure if a blade breaks. On machines with applied tires, a blade break can shred the tire. On the S 440P, it does not.

Euro-Style Guides: Upper and lower guide assemblies use Euro-style guides that set without tools. Position the thrust bearing approximately 1/8" back from the blade body; set the side guides close without contact, just behind the blade gullets. No feeler gauges needed. The guides may spin during a cut from blade harmonics — that is normal and not blade contact. The system uses an industry-standard mounting post, so aftermarket guide options fit without modification.

Cast Iron Flywheels: The 17.3" (440mm) diameter cast iron flywheels are dynamically balanced. Cast iron at this diameter and mass creates a genuine flywheel effect that smooths cutting loads and absorbs vibration through the cut. This is a meaningfully different cutting experience than aluminum-wheel machines deliver at similar price points.

Foot Brake: The cast iron flywheels carry significant rotational mass — without a brake, coasting to a stop takes considerable time. The foot brake brings the blade to a quick stop and includes a microswitch that cuts power to the motor when pressed, so the machine cannot be running while the brake is engaged. It is a safety feature that also makes the saw faster to work with in practice.

Blade Access: Upper and lower wheel doors open simultaneously with a single key, giving full access to both wheels at once. Blade changes are straightforward.

Cast Iron Table: The 20.47" x 28.34" table tilts from 0° to 45°. At over 20" deep, it provides solid workpiece support on long boards and wide panels throughout the cut.

Dust Collection: Two 120mm (4.7") dust ports, both positioned at the lower section of the machine, connect to standard 4" or 5" duct. Minimum 500 CFM required.

Optional Accessories:

  • MK Morse QuikSilver HB Hook, 1" x 1.3 TPI, 155" — primary resaw blade recommendation for this machine
  • MK Morse QuikSilver HEF Raker, 3/8" x 6 TPI, 155" — for curved and contour work; most customers benefit from both a resaw blade and a curve blade
  • MK Morse QuikSilver HEF, 1/4" x 14 TPI, 155" — for tight-radius work; the Euro guides handle 1/4" cleanly
  • MK Morse FB+, 1" x 3 TPI, 155" — carbide-tipped for serious hardwood resaw, veneer, and figured wood; Ohio-made, 3–10 day lead time
  • MK Morse FBS, 1/2" or 3/4" x 3 TPI, 155" — carbide for demanding curved work in hard or exotic species
  • Laguna Resaw King, 1" x 3 TPI, 155" — premium carbide alternative; 3–5 week made-to-order lead time
  • Bandsaw power feeder

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the S 440P compare to a Laguna LT16 or Powermatic PM1500?

Mass and tire construction are the defining differences. The S 440P is a heavier machine than either alternative. Cast iron flywheels at this diameter and weight create a genuine flywheel effect that smooths the cutting load and absorbs vibration in ways that lighter machines cannot replicate. The vulcanized tires — rubber bonded to the wheel rather than applied separately — deliver more consistent power transfer and will not shred if a blade breaks. These are not marketing distinctions; they show up in day-to-day use and in long-term durability.

I've read that these are now made by ACM, not the original Centauro. Is that a downgrade?

This question comes up regularly in woodworking communities and deserves a straight answer. SCM transitioned to ACM sourcing (Novellara, Italy) due to quality control concerns at Centauro following an ownership change. The original Centauro frames were heavier. ACM manufactures solid Italian machines from the same general design lineage, and the community consensus on current S-series machines is consistently positive. The current S 440P is the only new Italian bandsaw of this class available in the U.S. market today.

Do the Euro guides need to be upgraded?

No. The Euro-style guides that ship standard have a decades-long track record and are among the fastest guide systems to set correctly — no tools, no feeler gauges. Spend money on a quality blade before considering aftermarket guides. If you do want to run alternative guides down the road, the Euro system uses an industry-standard mounting post and aftermarket options fit without modification.

What is blade drift, and will this machine drift?

Blade drift is a setup and blade quality issue, not a machine characteristic. The S 440P uses flat tires, which means you can track the blade anywhere across the wheel and correct for drift at setup. A dull blade will drift on any saw regardless of price or quality. With a sharp, properly tensioned blade — the QuikSilver HB Hook or FB+ carbide — drift is not a practical issue.

Can I rip solid lumber on this instead of my table saw?

Yes, and many experienced woodworkers move most solid wood ripping to the bandsaw. It is safer than a table saw for this operation — no kickback risk — produces less waste from a thinner kerf, and is less fatiguing over a long session. The table saw remains the right tool for sheet goods and precise crosscutting. For ripping solid lumber, the bandsaw is the better machine.

Is business financing available?

Yes. OakTree has partnered with First Citizens Equipment Finance to offer business financing on qualifying purchases. Financing is available to established businesses and can be applied for directly from any qualifying product page — look for the monthly payment estimate below the Add to Cart button and click through to submit a pre-approval application. If approved, a First Citizens representative will follow up to discuss payment terms.

Is the SCM Formula S 440P eligible for a Section 179 tax deduction?

Yes. The SCM Formula S 440P qualifies as a capital equipment purchase under Section 179, which allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment in the year it is placed in service rather than depreciating it over several years. For a machine at this price point, that deduction can meaningfully offset the net cost of purchase. The deduction limit and phase-out thresholds adjust annually, so the exact benefit depends on your total equipment purchases for the year and your tax situation. Consult your tax advisor on how Section 179 applies to your business. See how much you could save with our Section 179 calculator.
