The ES is where the Minimax jointer/planer lineup makes a structural leap: true parallelogram tables, powered planer bed movement, and a changeover that requires removing nothing — all on a 230V, 30A circuit. At 87" of jointer bed and a full 16" working width, this machine handles what serious hobbyists and small professional shops actually need without asking you to run three-phase power to get there.

At a Glance

  • 87" (2,200mm) jointer table, 16" (410mm) working width — face-joint full-width furniture stock without a pre-rip pass
  • True parallelogram table system — 8 cam points keep both jointer tables coplanar at every jointing height setting; re-verification after adjustment is not necessary in normal use
  • Single-lever changeover — no fence removal, no guard removal, both tables unlock and lift simultaneously; dust hose stays connected throughout
  • 95mm Xylent spiral cutterhead — 66 carbide inserts, each with 4 cutting edges; rotate three times before replacing; measurably quieter than straight-knife heads
  • Powered planer bed movement with LED digital readout to 0.1mm resolution
  • 4-post planer table on dust-protected trapezoidal-threaded columns
  • True single-phase 4.8hp motor — 230V, 30A; not a three-phase motor run through a VFD, no phase converter required
  • Made in Italy by SCM Group — same manufacturer and foundry as their industrial standalone machines
  • Ships for free — forklift on site or local freight terminal pickup required for delivery

The Details

The FS lineup runs Classic, Elite, and Elite S — and the ES isn't just an incremental step. It's a different mechanism underneath. The Classic series runs separate jointer tables on a dovetail/wedge adjustment system. The Elite improves that platform. The Elite S connects both tables mechanically on a true parallelogram with eight cam adjustment points, four per table. Both tables unlock simultaneously with a single lever and open away from the operator at 90°. Independently, the parallelogram mechanism keeps both jointer tables coplanar through the full range of jointing height adjustment. On a wedge-adjusted machine, any height change can shift that relationship, requiring you to verify both surfaces before running stock. On the ES, the geometry is maintained by the mechanism itself.

The changeover sequence on the ES is worth understanding against competing machines. On Felder and Hammer combination machines, the planer table must travel all the way down before you can switch functions. On every Minimax, including the Classic, only mid-travel is required. The ES removes two more steps: on the Classic, the fence and guard both come off before switching. On the Elite, the fence stays but the guard comes off. On the ES, the guard stays in place and the fence moves to the operator-side position — it does not need to be removed. Both tables unlock with a single lever and open away from the operator at 90°. The dust port stays on the same side of the machine and floats between jointer and planer functions — the hose never gets repositioned.

The Xylent cutterhead runs 66 carbide inserts in a spiral pattern across a 95mm-diameter body. Each 15×15×2.5mm insert has four usable cutting edges — rotate the insert three times before replacing it. Spiral geometry shears at an angle rather than cutting head-on, which reduces operational noise and produces fine chips that are easier on your dust collection system. Carbide's wear resistance makes this the right choice for high-volume use, figured or silica-heavy species, and any shop where longevity matters more than the fastest possible knife swap. If your priority is the best possible surface quality at lower volume and the fastest knife change, look at the FS 41ES-T with the Tersa cutterhead — four self-indexing HSS knives that drop in without tools.

The planer table rides on four trapezoidal-threaded columns, each sealed against dust intrusion. Powered bed movement handles height positioning, with a digital LED readout showing position to 0.1mm. Two feed speeds give you 23 fpm for heavier cuts, thicker stock removal, and finish passes, and 46 fpm for moving dimension stock through quickly. The infeed roller is helicoidal steel for consistent grip across the full working width; the outfeed roller is rubber-coated for clean release without marring the finished surface.

At 1,285 lbs., this machine is built for long-term stability. Due to the machine's weight and dimensions, liftgate delivery is not a safe option — you will need either a forklift available on site or the ability to pick up from a local freight terminal.

Features

Parallelogram jointer tables: Infeed and outfeed tables connect mechanically and unlock simultaneously with a single lever. Eight cam points — four per table — maintain coplanarity through the full range of jointing height adjustment. Re-verification after height changes is not necessary in normal use.

Xylent spiral cutterhead: 95mm diameter, 66 carbide inserts in 3 rows of 15×15×2.5mm. Each insert has four cutting edges — rotate three times before replacing. Spiral geometry reduces noise and produces fine chips for better dust collection performance. Dynamometric key included for correct insert torque.

Single-lever changeover: The guard stays in place. The fence moves to the operator-side position but does not need to be removed. Both tables unlock with a single lever and open away from the operator at 90°. The dust port stays on the same side of the machine and floats between functions — the hose does not move.

4-post planer table: Four dust-protected trapezoidal-threaded columns provide long-term dimensional stability under daily use. Planer table size: 16.125" × 30.5" (410 × 775mm).

Powered planer bed movement: LED digital readout displays table height to 0.1mm resolution. Accurate height setting without a handwheel.

Jointer fence: 1,200mm × 150mm, center-mounted directly over the cutterhead via a rigid round-bar support. Tilts 0°–45°. Additional overturning fence included for thin workpieces.

True single-phase motor: 4.8hp, 230V. Some competing combination machines use a three-phase motor derated through a VFD to run on single-phase power, which reduces actual output. This is a purpose-built single-phase motor. No VFD, no phase converter. Dedicated 30A circuit required.

Two feed speeds: 23 fpm for heavier cuts, thicker stock removal, and finish passes; 46 fpm for moving dimension stock through quickly.

OSHA-compliant spring guard: American-style spring guard ships standard. Always covers the unused portion of the cutterhead without requiring manual repositioning when the fence moves. A European-style guard is available as an accessory through OakTree.

Mortising table pre-setting: Ships with mortising table pre-setting installed. The 0–16mm self-centering chuck attaches directly and is compatible with the FS 41 family. Mortising chuck available separately.

Mobility kit: Wheels included standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the FS 41ES and the FS 41E?

Three structural changes. First, the ES uses a parallelogram table mechanism with 8 cam points instead of the FS 41E's dovetail/wedge system — both tables are mechanically connected and stay coplanar at every jointing height setting without requiring re-verification. Second, the ES changeover requires removing neither the fence nor the guard; on the E, the fence stays in place but the guard needs to come off. Third, the ES planer table rides on four trapezoidal-threaded, dust-protected columns, and powered planer bed movement with an LED digital readout is standard on all ES configurations.

What is the difference between the Xylent and Tersa cutterheads?

The right choice depends on how the machine gets used. The FS 41ES-T uses four HSS knives on a 95mm cutterhead — they self-index on installation and can be swapped without tools in under a minute. Many furniture makers prefer the Tersa's surface quality for final-pass work. The Xylent (this machine) runs 66 carbide inserts with four usable cutting edges per insert — rotate three times, then replace. Carbide outlasts HSS significantly in high-volume use and holds up better on abrasive species, figured grain, and reclaimed material. For a shop running the machine daily or processing difficult stock, the Xylent's longevity and reduced noise are the meaningful advantages.

Does this machine require a phase converter?

No. Some combination machines in this category use a three-phase motor run through a VFD to operate on single-phase power, which derate the motor's actual output. This machine runs a purpose-built 4.8hp single-phase motor on 230V — no phase converter, no VFD. You need a dedicated 30A, 240V circuit. If you have three-phase power available, the FS 41ES-X is also offered with an 8hp, 220V three-phase motor — see the separate listing.

What dust collection does this machine require?

Minimum 600 CFM through a single 4.7" (120mm) port. The port stays on the same side of the machine and floats between jointer and planer functions without being repositioned. The Xylent cutterhead produces finer chips than a straight-knife head, which improves extraction efficiency at the same CFM.

How does changeover work on the ES compared to other Minimax models?

The ES is the simplest changeover of any machine in the C, E, and ES families. On the Classic series, the fence and guard both need to come off before switching. On the Elite, the fence stays but the guard comes off. On the ES, the guard stays in place and the fence moves to the operator-side position — it does not need to be removed. Both tables unlock with a single lever and open away from the operator at 90°. The dust hose stays where it is. If you're comparing against Felder or Hammer, note that those machines require the planer table to travel all the way down before switching functions. On every Minimax — including the Classic — mid-travel is sufficient.

Can I add a mortiser to this machine?

Yes. The FS 41ES ships with the mortising table pre-setting already installed. The 0–16mm self-centering chuck attaches directly and is compatible with the FS 41 family. The mortising chuck is available separately.

Does the listed price include shipping?

Yes, shipping is free. Due to the machine's weight and dimensions, liftgate delivery is not a safe option — you will need either a forklift available on site or the ability to pick up from a local freight terminal.

Is the Minimax FS 41ES-X eligible for a Section 179 tax deduction?

Yes. The Minimax FS 41ES-X qualifies as a capital equipment purchase under Section 179, which allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment in the year it is placed in service rather than depreciating it over several years. For a machine at this price point, that deduction can meaningfully offset the net cost of purchase. The deduction limit and phase-out thresholds adjust annually, so the exact benefit depends on your total equipment purchases for the year and your tax situation. Consult your tax advisor on how Section 179 applies to your business. See how much you could save with our Section 179 calculator.
